What is an RRSP? Why do you need to know this definition? The MoneySense Glossary is your resource for learning and understanding financial terms.
A registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) is a nest-egg account that was introduced by the federal government to help Canadians save for retirement. It is one of the oldest retirement savings plans, introduced in 1957.
The main advantage is account holders can defer the taxes on RRSP contributions and investment earnings until retirement when gross income is likely to drop, putting the account holder in a lower tax bracket.
In French, an RRSP is known as a régime enregistré d’épargne‑retraite (REER).
Example: “The deadline to contribute to this year’s RRSP is next March.”
