A stock is a type of investment that gives you part ownership of the company that issued it. Stocks, also referred to as shares or equity, are bought and sold on stock markets or exchanges. Shareholders are entitled to a slice of the company’s earnings and assets—and they also share in its losses. Most stocks are common shares, which provide voting rights at shareholder meetings. The other main type is preferred shares, which offer other features (such as fixed dividends) but no voting rights.
Example: “Lucy bought stock in her favourite apparel company.”
